First, it was the legal consequences. Now, Brandy is facing some of the financial consequences of a fatal crash she was involved in last month.
The parents of the woman killed in the freeway crash are suing the singer and actress for $50 million dollars.
The wrongful-death lawsuit filed in Los Angeles claims Brandy was driving recklessly when her Land Rover struck the back of a Honda driven by a 38-year-old woman. The lawsuit comes just one day after authorities with the California Highway Patrol recommended that Brandy be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
Nick Velasquez, CHP spokesman, says the case is currently under review to determine whether the evidence warrants the charge. Earlier this month, Brandy publicly expressed condolences to the victim's family. Her publicist, Courtney Barnes, says the 27-year-old songbird was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
According to a CHP report, Brandy was driving her 2007 Land Rover on I-405 on Dec. 30 when traffic unexpectedly slowed. She hit the back of a car driven by 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj.
Aboudihaj then hit another vehicle, slid sideways into the center divider and was hit by another car, the report said. Aboudihaj, who was a waitress in Los Angeles, died from blunt-force injuries, according to the coroner's office.
In part of the police report obtained by AP, the CHP alleges Brandy caused the accident by driving at a speed "greater than is reasonable or prudent" or that "endangers the safety of persons or property."
Brandy, who had made five albums, began her recording career at 14 and earned a Grammy in 1999. She has landed roles in movies and TV, starring in her own sitcom "Moesha" from 1996 -2001. Most recently, she was a judge for NBC's "America's Got Talent."
